Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Why use horses for therapy?

Traditionally, horse riding is seen as a purely recreational activity. However, the horse has been an integral part of human progress and prosperity for centuries.

Horses have been used as a mode of transport, either by riding or driving; have been implemented as an agricultural tool; been a force to reckon with in many a battle; and been a loyal friend and companion for those more fortunate.

For many of us there is a tangible, yet mystical connection between the spirit of the horse and the human psyche.

This connection has driven the courageous to experiment with these huge, people-loving, highly intelligent beasts as therapeutic assistants in many disciplines.

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy is an experiential type of psychotherapy that provides ample opportunities for clients to express themselves through non-verbal interaction.

During the experiences with the horse(s) clients observe and are observed, by both the therapist and the horse(s); interact with both the therapist and the horse(s); and get feedback from both the therapist and the horse(s).

This basically means that the horse(s) become active participants in the client’s journey of growth and development.

It is often a profound experience of discovery and change on a deeper level than can be put into words.

The who and how of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy?

EFT (Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy) is always structured around the specific needs of the client and can therefore be adapted for any situation.

The horses are not seen as tools in the therapeutic process, but rather as participants in our healing journeys.

They are really good mirrors for our emotions and usually bring interesting and insightful (often hidden) content to the fore.

Each horse seems to have very specific topics with which they can assist us and the work of the therapist is mostly to guide the process to optimally allow for the work to be done, rather than to plan or structure the session.

After an initial intake interview, the therapeutic goals are discussed and the destiny of the therapeutic journey determined, if the horse or herd is deemed relevant companions, then the experiential interaction with them is included in your process.

SUZETTE WEIDEMAN

My own journey with horses started as a little girl. It was a love affair from the word go. I remember staring out the window of our green chev station wagon at every horsebox we passed hoping to catch a glimpse!

It was actually the horses that lead me to become a Psychologist and not the other way around. While offering therapeutic riding, pony camps and riding lessons it was so clear that something happens to the children interacting with the horses that touches them on a deeper level. I wanted to understand this and decided to do research on the topic, went back to University to do only that and instead ended up doing my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. And here I am 20 years later, still in awe of how they can strum our deepest chords.

We live at the foot of the majestic Magaliesberg mountain range, where our herd consists of a diverse group of Equine Therapists- from fourth generation horses that grew up with us, to recently rescued elders that have come to offer their wisdom, and everything in between. Please come and meet them and let your heart listen to their stories as they listen to yours.
